Dunolly

European settlement of the Dunolly area began when Archibald McDougall took up the Dunolly run in 1845. He named his property after Dunolly Castle, the Scottish seat of the McDougall clan chiefs since the 11th century.

The discovery of gold in 1852 drew the first rush of European and Chinese prospectors to the field. A settlement known as Dunolly developed near McDougall’s homestead, and the pastoralist soon abandoned his run.

A major gold strike occurred a few kilometres from the original settlement in 1856. A township, first known as New Dunnolly, grew up at this site. The rush caused by the 1856 discovery is said to have attracted more than 35,000 people to the field.

Many thanks to Bev for another fine post office photograph.
Such amaranthine efforts…
