Adhesive

a stamp which has to be affixed to a letter, postcard or packet with gum or other. As apposed to a stamp already printed on the envelope.

A schoolmaster from England, Rowland Hill invented the adhesive postage stamp in 1837, an act for which he was knighted. Before the use of adhesive paper stamps, letters were hand stamped or postmarked with ink.
