Royal Mail has prepared for issuing a set of stamps featuring six species of bees from different parts of the United Kingdom. The stamps will be launched on the 18th of August.
Bees are our unacknowledged partners and ancient allies, vital in the pollination of food crops, keeping farms in business and in helping parks, gardens and the countryside to thrive. Yet bees are in decline in their numbers and their range.
Six UK bee species have been chosen to give representation of all parts of the UK, different habitats and the different kinds of bee species that breed in the UK (two bumblebee species and four ‘solitary’ bees).
The six individual stamps have been designed by Anna Ekelund and illustrated by prominent wildlife illustrator Richard Lewington. The Honeybee miniature sheet focuses on the Western honeybee, Apis mellifera. Four stamps, designed by Interabang and with illustrations by Andy English, portray different aspects of apian behaviour.
