Teatro “La Fenice” in Venice commemorated on Italian stamp
12.11.2013

Italian Post issued a new stamp within the series “The Italian Cultural and Artistic Heritage” dedicated to the Teatro “La Fenice” in Venice, celebrating this year the 10th anniversary of the reopening on December 14, 2003.

Teatro “La Fenice” is one of the most famous theatres in Europe, the site of many famousoperatic premieres. Its name reflects its role in permitting an opera company to “rise from the ashes” despite losing the use of two theatres (to fire and legal problems respectively). Since opening and being named La Fenice, it has burned and been rebuilt twice more.

The stamp depicts the interior of the “La Fenice”, completely destroyed by the fire in 1996 and subsequently rebuilt and reopened in 2003.
