Not many people have encountered a bear (Ursus arctos arctos) in its natural state in Norway and there is little chance of a random wanderer doing so. Nonetheless, and particularly in the wake of Swedish hunters’ recent experiences, many people are afraid to walk through bear country. People who know their haunts maintain, however, that you are unlikely to meet a bear. You can take a few simple precautions, such as talking to your companions. A little noise will usually keep it away. Our North-European brown bear is a medium-sized bear. The largest males can be up to 2.3 metres tall and weigh as much as 350 kg in the autumn.
The colour of their fur varies a great deal, from very pale yellow-brown or grey-brown to dark brown and almost black. The brown bear is common in large parts of the northern temperate coniferous zone. A thousand years ago it was found all over Europe, but deforestation and cultivation have driven it out.
There are estimated to be about 1,500 bears in Norway, Sweden and Finland today.
