Kapatagan was formerly a part of Kolambugan, it existed as municipal district from 1939 to 1948. Kapatagan later became a larger municipality July 5, 1949 by Virtue of Executive Order No. 273. The towns name was derived from the Visayan word patag meaning “plain” or valley. Kapatagan is a municipality in the province Lanao Del Norte in Region X Northern Mindanao which belongs to the Mindanao group of islands. The municipality Kapatagan is seated about 17 kms.

South of the provincial capital of Tubod and about 803 kms., south-southeast of Philippine’s capital city of Manila.

Kapatagan, as a second- class municipality, is classified as partly urban. Kapatagan occupies an area of 242.89 km. By the end of 2007, Kapatagan was the home of 49,134 residents, thus by average 202.29 people are living on one square kilometers.

Administratively, the Municipality of Kapatagan is subdivided into 33 barangays. One barangay seats at the center of the city, wheras, the other 32 barangays are in the outlying areas. Some of them are even several kilometers away from the center of the Municipality. The most populous are Durano, Tulatulahan, Bagong Badian, San Isidro, Pulang Yuta, Suso, Malinas, Kahayagan, La Libertad, Tipolo, Buenavista, Concepcion, Belis, Cathedral Falls and Tiacongan. Among the bigger cities and municipalities in the neighborhood of Kapatagan there are Pagadian City (Zamboanga Del Sur) 44 km west, Iligan City 62 km north-east, Ozamis City (Misamis Occidental) 29 km north-north-east, Zamboanga City (Zamboanga Del Sur) 37 km west, Marawi City (Lanao Del Sur) 58 km east, Cotabato City (Cotabato City) 91 km south-east, Datu Odin Sinsuat (Dinaig) (Maguindanao) 91 km south-south-east, Oroquieta City (Misamis Occidental) 65 km north, Dipolog City (Zamboanga Del Norte) 80 km north-west as well as 92 km north-west of Kapatagan the municipality Dapitan City (Zamboanga Del Norte).

Cathedral Falls – commonly called as Cathedral falls, is located 2 kilometers away from Barangay Poblacion and is accessible by all types of vehicles since the road leading to this majestic falls is already develop although there are some portions which are not concreted yet. Cathedral Falls is so-called due to its majestic formation of rocks resembling designs of a famous cathedral, through which the cascading water from upstream Barangay Kidalos is flowing.
